Cardio or weights – what burns more calories?

You are done with your lifting session and look up how many calories you’ve burned on your fitness watch because it was damn exhausting today.

“There must be an error with my watch” you think, as you only see 250kcal burned from your hard training session. That’s nothing more than 150g of cooked rice.

First off: Lifting weights is a great way to build your body and get stronger but when it comes to burning calories I need to disappoint you. You will more likely burn 3x times the amount of calories through a slow jog in the same amount of time.

Do you need to run now instead of lifting weights to build your body?

Hell. No.

We don’t strength train with the goal to burn calories but to build muscles and get stronger.

That’s what it’s all about.

Getting stronger will allow you to move more weight

​→ more weight will allow you to create more tension in your muscles

→ more tension in your muscles will make your muscles grow.

If your goal is to lean out, you don’t have to do tons of cardio. You first and foremost need to be in a caloric deficit and adjust your training stimulus to your goal.

But strength training is the key driver to help you build a lean look and maintain muscles in a deficit.

So, please don’t use fitness watches to track your burned calories and activity level throughout the day. They are highly inaccurate. The only thing they are good for is as a step tracker.
